Our heating expenses for the house with the useful space of 90 m² in the heating period 2024-2025 were:

  • In the coldest winter months December - February: 22.1 euro* per month in average only! This is 0.74 euro per 1 m² and a daily average of 0.83 euro per 100 m².

  • In the whole heating period November - April: 94.5 euro* in total! This is 1.05 euro per 1 m² for the whole heating period 2024-2025.

  • In Central Serbia. Heating only, not including DHW as its consumption may vary significantly. DHW — Domestic Hot Water is hot water for shower and other needs.

It is noteworthy that we consume about 250 kWh per month at the higher day tariff (6:00-22:00). After our impressive optimization of heating and domestic hot water (DHW) costs along with achieving a comfort level of a city apartment, it turned out that daytime consumption leads to costs 30% higher than nighttime consumption. And this is despite the fact that the dishwasher, washing machine, and dryer also operate on the night tariff! This directly led us to analyze the possibilities of optimizing daytime electricity costs as well, firstly, with our DIY hybrid water heater.

We’ve developed a comprehensive calculator to help make optimal investment decisions for energy cost optimization. The calculator analyzes various scenarios, including solar collector, night-tariff heating and daytime electricity consumption coverage through solar power (both OFF-GRID and ON-GRID systems). It provides detailed calculations of payback periods, total savings, and return on investment (ROI) over the system’s lifespan. Through this analysis, we gained clear insights into solar power plant investments, including optimal capacity, system type, and key parameters. We also evaluated combining the system with an electric vehicle (EV). Our calculations factor in all crucial elements: equipment prices, lifespans, component replacements, and projected increases in electricity and fuel prices.
